We are excited to be learning about lots of fabulous topics which cross over all areas of the Curriculum. Our topics this year are; animal magic and celebrations, we are Britain and If you go down to the woods today. We feel sure that the children will love travelling the globe and going back in time to find about these areas of learning.
In English we enjoy reading and discussing rich and exciting texts to inspire us. We want to instill a love for both reading and writing so carefully choose stories, poems and non-fiction texts to enhance our topics and get our imaginations soaring.
In Maths we build upon the work the children have done in Year 1. We will follow the CPA maths mastery approach: Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract. We know that practical activities (concrete materials), investigations and linking Maths to real life are key in developing Mathematical thinkers. We use lots of visual (pictorial) and kinaesthetic tools to engage the children in their Maths; making abstract areas such as Place Value, addition and subtraction and fractions come to life and meet the needs of all our different learning styles. We have some brilliant times tables dances too – we look forward to sharing these with both children and parents!
Science, where possible, also links in with our topics. We have created Science lessons which cover areas such as practical investigation, observations, data handling as well as sorting and classifying. We make the most of being outside in our wonderful woodland area as well as using our pond. We promote investigative thinkers and the children have the opportunity to plan and carry out their own investigations throughout the year.
We enjoy developing our art and DT skills through painting, printing, drawing, sculpting as well as creating our very own invention! We will teach a range of different skills for children to develop and experiment with to develop their artistic expression.
We have integrated ICT across the curriculum and use Chrome books for research, coding activities and recording.
We are lucky to go on some wonderful trips in Year 2. We return to Forest Schools to enhance our ‘If you go down to the woods today’ topic. As well as visiting Claydon House. We also love having visitors to our class and hope to have a return visit from a real-life explorer!
We look forward to sharing the Year 2 experience with you and your children.
